About

How To Do It Guides started in 2021 after Simon Hoel's son was diagnosed with ADHD. Frustrated by the gap between what clinicians recommend and what actually works on a Tuesday morning, he started writing down what helped. That became The Bright Mind.

What we publish

Practical, research-backed, self-administered protocols for conditions where the medical system says "here's a pamphlet" but you need a playbook. Every guide is:

  • Written by someone who lived it. Not theory. Tested on real humans in real kitchens at real bedtimes.
  • Actionable tonight. You can start page one at 9pm and have a plan by the time you turn out the light.
  • No filler. We cut the fluff. If a paragraph doesn't help you do something differently, it doesn't belong.

Our guides

We cover seven topics, each with a dedicated protocol:

  • ADHD parenting — scripts, routines, and environmental design for the ADHD household
  • Anxiety management — CBT-based techniques for the 11pm spiral and the daytime hum
  • TMJ & jaw pain — muscle release, posture retraining, and habit reversal
  • Tinnitus habituation — attention retraining and sound enrichment protocols
  • Sleep & insomnia — self-administered CBT-I, the gold standard for chronic insomnia
  • Dog separation anxiety — alone-training protocols that respect your dog's nervous system
  • Perimenopause — symptom tracking, lifestyle interventions, and advocacy scripts for doctor visits

Why we exist

The internet is full of how-to articles, YouTube videos, and Reddit threads. Some are great. Most aren't. They're padded, missing the steps that actually matter, or they assume you already know what you're doing.

We do the work of distilling thousands of pages of clinical research into guides you can read in an evening and start using tomorrow morning. No credentials required. No prior knowledge assumed. Just the plan.
